Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), the dairy giant behind the iconic Amul brand, has officially launched Amul Milk in Spain, further strengthening its international presence. The launch marks a strategic collaboration between GCMMF and Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (COVAP), a leading first-tier Spanish cooperative.
Amul Milk will first hit the shelves in Madrid and Barcelona, with plans to expand soon into Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Córdoba, and even Lisbon in neighboring Portugal. This move aligns with Amul’s broader vision of penetrating key European markets, with future launches planned in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
The official launch event was hosted at the Embassy of India in Madrid and was graced by several dignitaries, including Dinesh K. Patnaik, Ambassador of India to Spain; D. Fernando Heredia Noguera, Deputy Director for International Relations and Community Affairs at the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; Ricardo Delgado Vizcaíno, President of COVAP; and senior officials from Amul and its distribution partners in Spain.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This association will ensure all our Spanish consumers will be nourished and energized with the goodness of Amul Milk.” He added that the brand will begin by offering Amul Gold full cream milk in tetra packs, each with a shelf life of six months. Distribution has already commenced across the initial target cities.
This European expansion follows Amul’s successful fresh milk launch in the United States last year. GCMMF has been scaling its global operations steadily, driven by increasing demand and a robust supply chain backed by 3.6 million dairy farmers. In FY 2023-24, the cooperative posted a revenue of ₹65,911 crore, reflecting an 11% growth, primarily due to increased volumes across all product categories.
As the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative and the eighth-largest milk processor globally (as per IFCN rankings), Amul operates 112 dairy plants in India with a daily milk handling capacity of 42 million litres. The Amul brand is also recognized as the strongest dairy brand worldwide, managing over 12 billion litres of milk annually and generating revenues exceeding USD 11 billion.
COVAP, Amul’s Spanish partner, was founded in 1959 in Pozoblanco, Córdoba. The cooperative represents over 2,000 active farmers and plays a pivotal role in Andalusia’s agri-food industry. COVAP’s state-of-the-art dairy plant processes more than 400 million litres of milk each year and exports to over 30 countries, including the US, UK, and several Asian nations.
The GCMMF-COVAP collaboration not only underscores Amul’s commitment to delivering quality dairy globally but also highlights the growing synergy between India’s cooperative strength and Europe’s advanced dairy infrastructure.
