Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the iconic ‘Amul’ brand, is set to invest ₹600 crore in establishing an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata. This facility will also host the world’s largest curd (dahi) manufacturing unit, according to GCMMF’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta. The announcement was made during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), where GCMMF committed to this significant investment. The state-of-the-art plant, to be located in the Sankrail Food Park in Howrah near Kolkata, will have a curd production capacity of 10 lakh kilograms per day and a total milk processing capacity of 15 lakh liters per day.
Jayen Mehta highlighted the robust demand for curd in Kolkata and its surrounding areas, noting the popularity of local varieties like tok doi and mishti doi. The new plant will cater to this growing demand while further solidifying Amul’s presence in West Bengal. Currently, Amul is the largest fresh milk brand in the state, with daily sales exceeding 10 lakh liters of milk. The dairy cooperative has an extensive milk procurement network in 14 districts of Bengal, supported by over 1.2 lakh women milk producers. The new plant is expected to further strengthen the cooperative movement in the region under the White Revolution 2.0 initiative of the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India.
GCMMF’s impressive growth is evident in its financial performance, with turnover increasing by 8% in the 2023-24 fiscal year to ₹59,445 crore. The company expects double-digit revenue growth in the current fiscal year, driven by strong market demand. In the last financial year, GCMMF processed an average of 310 lakh liters of milk daily, with an annual processing capacity of approximately 500 lakh liters. Globally, GCMMF stands as the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, encompassing 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat. Its 18 member unions procure 300 lakh liters of milk daily, ranking it 8th among the top 20 dairy companies worldwide in terms of milk processing, according to the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN).
Beyond India, GCMMF exports its dairy products to around 50 countries. Recently, it entered the US market with the launch of four variants of fresh milk aimed at serving the Indian diaspora and Asian communities. The investment in West Bengal comes at a time when the state has received proposals worth over ₹4.40 lakh crore during the two-day Bengal Global Business Summit 2025, as announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
