Assam’s dairy sector has achieved a significant milestone with the export of its first international consignment of Purabi Ice Cream to Bhutan, marking a major step in expanding value-added dairy exports from the North Eastern Region. The inaugural shipment of 5,627 litres was flagged off by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati. Exported by North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL), the consignment will supply Purabi Ice Cream to key markets in Thimphu, Paro, Phuentsholing, and Wangdue.

Purabi Ice Cream is manufactured by the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) and marketed by NEDFL using milk sourced through Purabi Dairy’s cooperative network across Assam. The first shipment includes cups, cones, family packs, and gallon packs for both retail and institutional buyers. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the export by supporting documentation, regulatory compliance, market access, and stakeholder coordination.

NEDFL plans to expand its export portfolio with additional Purabi Dairy products having longer shelf life while gradually increasing export volumes based on market demand. The initiative is expected to enhance the international presence of dairy products from Assam, create sustainable export opportunities, and improve income prospects for thousands of dairy farmers in the region. Welcoming the development, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the shipment as a landmark achievement for India’s dairy sector, stating that it reflects the growing global competitiveness of Indian dairy products and will open new income and export opportunities for dairy farmers across the North Eastern region.
